Taryn and Dan reached the bottom of the beginner’s slope and unclamped the skis from their boots. Laura appeared, with a companionable smile for Dan and a look that shot daggers through Taryn. A tall blond man, with acne-scarred cheeks and a ski outfit that probably cost him a few hundred dollars, stood a little behind Laura.

“My, but you’re limiting yourself today, aren’t you?” Laura asked Dan as she slipped her arm through his. “You’ve been on the beginner’s slope all afternoon. What a fate for a guy who was once considered an Olympic hopeful! You simply must ski with me on one of the expert runs before we go to the party. I won’t take no for an answer.”

Dan had the decency to cast a look Taryn’s way, showing he remembered her existence. After their silent run down the mountain, Taryn wasn’t so sure. Though, to give the guy credit, he had stopped when she’d fallen and waited for her to fumble to her feet.

“Your little maid will be fine. Derrick will take her back to the lodge so she can thaw out. Won’t you, Derrick?” She flashed a smile his way then directed her gaze to Taryn. “My, but she does seem to be wearing a lot of snow, doesn’t she?” She arched a brow and laughed.

Taryn narrowed her gaze but chose not to say or do anything except to brush what snow she could from her quilted nylon jacket and gloves. Dan gave her a sympathetic glance before Laura whisked him away toward the lift for the expert slope.

The walk back to the lodge was uncomfortable. Were all the men of Pinecrest so lacking in conversation skills? Obviously the man who clumped alongside her, his thick lips drawn into a pinched frown, wasn’t too happy to be stuck with the “little maid.” Taryn clenched her teeth. If Laura had known whom she was addressing she wouldn’t have been so smug. It almost would have been worth her finding out just to see her face go slack.

Taryn forced thoughts of petty revenge away. How could she so flippantly think of revealing her identity, even for a second, when a loved one’s life could be endangered if she did? Death row was nothing to take lightly. She would continue the charade and swallow her pride.

Inside the spacious lodge Derrick led Taryn to the sunken area of the conversational pit where a few skiers, not from Laura’s party, gathered. A tall, flocked Christmas tree stood behind a college-aged couple sitting on one of three upholstered sofas. The two were obviously quite in love and unaware of anyone else’s existence, staring only at each other. A middle-aged man sat forward on the center couch, facing the huge freestanding fireplace. He stared into the fire’s yellow glow but looked anything but happy. His elbows rested on his knees, his hands clutched between them, and a frown puckered his low brow.

“I’ll get us some eggnog,” Derrick announced to the fire and walked away.

“I’d prefer something hot,” Taryn called after him.
